Warm Up - read the articles to the right and look at the infograph below for our warm up questions. http://www.charlottefive.com/need-know-brain-eating-amoeba-whitewater-center/ After the notes, we added new vocabulary to page 73 in our notebooks...on Infectious Diseases. The powerpoint from today can be found here. Make sure you get the definition AND add anything in red.
We also took a quick quiz on cells and organelles. THis will be your fist formal grade of 4th quarter. This grade will probably not go into PowerSChools until next week when the quarter officially starts. Took a minute in class today to do a simulation of disease transmission. Most of us will be shocked about quickly a disease gets through our class. Lastly, if we have time we will go around the room and learn about different pathogens. (bacteria, virus, parasites and fungi)

Warm up - look at the three websites below, make a chart in our warm up showing the benefits and harmful effects of organisms from the Kingdom Protista.

We also spent a few minutes reviewing cell and protist vocabulary before our quiz. After the notes, we added new vocabulary to page 73 in our notebooks...on Infectious Diseases. Warm Up - read the articles to the right and look at the infograph below for our warm up questions. http://www.charlottefive.com/need-know-brain-eating-amoeba-whitewater-center/ Today, you have a number of things to do with Protists. All of the information you need is on the blendspace.
As you are working, I'll will be calling you up to the microscopes to look at the slides of EUGLENA, VOLVOX, PARAMECIUM and AMOEBA. Draw these images on page 71. Draw what you see in the microscope NOT what you think you should see. Whatever is not finished in class today, needs to be finished up for homework. Next we took notes on bacteria on page 72. If you were not here for the notes, here are the notes if you were absent.
After the notes, we added new vocabulary to page 78 in our notebooks...on Infectious Diseases. The powerpoint from today can be found here. Make sure you get the definition AND add anything in red. Our warm up today was a review of cell organelles using a cell rap.
Use the following websites to finish filling in the information on each of the Kingdoms. Make sure you you identfiy the following characteristics for each Kingdom.
http://www.factmonster.com/science/biology/six-kingdoms.html http://www.veritasprep.com/the-six-kingdoms-by-veritas-prep/ http://www.ric.edu/faculty/ptiskus/six_kingdoms/ We are reviewing the Kingdoms because as we move into infectious diseases many of the infectious diseases are caused by Protists, Fungi and Bacteria. Today, you have a number of things to do with Protists.
Our warm up tpday was a review of the cell memebrane and its functions. Next we completed our gummy bear lab and copnnected it to osmosis. Next, as another exercise in omsosis, we took a look at Elodea cells under themicroscope. Elodea plants are fresh water plants that have super thin leaves. Since the leaves are so thin, we actually see the chloroplasts. We made two slides, one with fresh water and one with salt water to see the difference between how the chloroplasts react differently. We created a flipbook of cellular respiration and photosynthesis. The flip book will go on the back of page 68. If you were absent here are the notes on cellular respiration and photosynthesis. Finally we finished up with some information on Kingdoms using the following sites. Title page 69 KINGDOMS and divide the page into 6 sections.
The first thing I want you to do is watch the Brainpop on the SIX KINGDOMS. As you are watching, take notes on each of the kingdoms on page 69 in your notebook. www.brainpop.com/science/diversityoflife/sixkingdoms/ Take the GRADED brain pop quiz and email me the results. [email protected] Use the following websites to finish filling in the information on each of the Kingdoms. Make sure you you identfiy the following characteristics for each Kingdom.
http://www.factmonster.com/science/biology/six-kingdoms.html http://www.veritasprep.com/the-six-kingdoms-by-veritas-prep/ http://www.ric.edu/faculty/ptiskus/six_kingdoms/
Next, we went over the organelles on the back of page 64. Again, tis ashould be a review from 7th grade. We took a look at our gummy bear experiment and saw the differences between last class and today. There was quite a difference in our bears. Lastly we added notes on the cell membrane on page 71 in our notebooks. If you were not here, here are the notes on the cell membrane. To end the block you completed the conclusion for the lab on a separate sheet of paper - hopefully making connections between the lab and cells. Our purpose: Which type of water (tap water, distilled water, salt water) will cause gummy bears to swell? Which type of water (tap water, distilled water, salt water) will cause gummy bears to shrink? Based on the purpose of the lab complete the conclusion. Conclusion: Write a paragraph which explains the results of this experiment using the concept of osmosis. Include specific data to explain your results and support conclusions. Make sure you compare and contrast the similarities and differences between all three gummy bears. Draw pictures if it helps. Make sure to include the definition of osmosis.
Our warm up is a review of energy and energy resources. Next, we set up our lab on osmosis. We will be talking about osmosis next class, since the lab will need to sit over night, we will set it up today. Next, we went over your blendspace on page 65. Remember the blendspace was meant to be a review of cells from last year. To practice using microscopes again, we went around the room and did microscope drawings on page 66 in our notebooks. Next, we went over the different organelles. Cell organelles are a review from last year. If we have time, we will add notes in our notebooks on Cell Membrane. Lastly, we will have our energy quiz on Schoolnet.
Warm up is a quick review of Potential and Kinetic energy and renewable and non renewable resources. Quiz next class on energy resources. We also turned in our Energy Analysis graph which was for homework last class and went over the answers to the back of our energy resource chart. We are starting our new unit today on cells and microbiology and set up our notebook with a new cover sheet and table of contents. As an intro to cells and microbiology, I wanted to give you guys a chance to use the microscopes. We will use them today, and a couple of times during the unit. Today will just be practice with using the microscopes and next class we will practice with microscope drawings. To review some key concepts from 7th grade science, we completed a BLENDSPACE. Use the digital content I have selected to answer the review questions. Answer the questions on page 65 in you notebook using complete sentences. https://www.tes.com/lessons/CQPJeW_RwfREqQ/cells cell_review.docx Download File Lastly, we highlighted and added notes to a handout that had a list of cell organelles and their functions. Quiz next class on energy
