Warm up - our warm up was a handout titled, "5 Points of Natural Selection" - If you were absent, please come get a copy to complete as a review of natural selection. I also checked your lab graph and conclusion while you were doing your warm up. On page 53 in our notebook we added notes on Homologous and Analogous structures, another piece of evidence that supports evolution. If you were not here, here are the notes and come get the handouts from me. For our last assignment today we took at look at different adaptations for plants and animals using stations.
Station 1 is vocabulary. You can use www.vocabulary.com for the definitions, make sure you look for the scientific definition. For the second box, include an animal example of each vocabulary word. For example birds migrate to find food, water and shelter during the winter. Stations 2 and 3 are handouts that you can pick up from the back of the room. Station 4 Read the article on adaptations from the back of the room. (This one must be done TODAY---the others can be done at home if you need to) Below are the links for Station 5: (ear buds are up front if you need them) http://www.nhptv.org/natureworks/nwep1.htm http://studyjams.scholastic.com/studyjams/jams/science/animals/animal-adaptations.htm Our warm up today was a review of natural selection and adaptation with a reading assignment in Charles Darwin. We watched this video on evolution. https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/labs/lab/evolution/research#/chooser 11. According to your results, out of all the beaks, which species has nature selected for? Which species has nature has selected against? 2. According to your results, which “worm” is nature selecting for? What species has nature selected against? 3. If we looked at this population of birds and worms in the next 5 years, how do you think the population will look? 4. How does this activity demonstrate the concept of natural selection? 5. Is there any way that this activity does NOT show natural selection? Finally, we completed an activity simulating natural selection using the Peppered Moths and Industrial Revolution. The website for this activity can be found here. Students clicked through the website and answered questions on the Peppered Moths on page 52 in their notebooks. Here is the handout from the Peppered Moth activity.
peppered_moth_simulation.docx Download File HOMEWORK - If you did not finish the peppered moth activity and the genetics handout, finish them for homework. Our warm up today was an example of evolution that scientists are seeing right now. Read this article and we will and we will answer some questions in our warm up folders. Elephants stick it to ivory poachers by not growing tusks Once you have read the article--watch the video with the sound off (no earbuds needed) In our notebook we added notes on Natural Selection and Adaptation on page 50. If you were absent, here are the notes you missed. natural_selection_and_adaptation_notes.pptx Download File After completing the lab, we graphed the results and completed the conclusion. If you did not finish the conclusion, here are the questions. 1. According to your results, out of all the beaks, which species has nature selected for? Which species has nature has selected against? 2. According to your results, which “worm” is nature selecting for? What species has nature selected against? 3. If we looked at this population of birds and worms in the next 5 years, how do you think the population will change? 4. How does this activity demonstrate the concept of natural selection? The handout you received today, titled "Darwin's 5 Points of Natural Selection" is a review of the theories used to support Darwin. You can find this handout here if you lost it, it is due next class. darwinsfivepoints.pdf Download File Warm Up - Read this article on Vestigial Organs and answer the questions from the board in your warm up folder. We went over the vocabulary and added notes to the vocabulary on page 49. 1.Mutation 2.Natural selection 3.Adaptation 4.Vestigial organs 5.Evolution 6.Speciation Next we watched some video clips on biological evolution through Discovery Education. DISCOVERY EDUCATION- make sure you log into Discovery Ed first through your student portal and then click the link below. You do not have to watch all of the clips, just the 6 listed below. Click here for video. Elements of Biology: Biological Evolution Watch the following and fill in the video guide. 1.Introduction to Charles Darwin 2.A new Understanding of Life 3.From the Big Bang to Early Life 4.The Evolution of Complex Organisms (questions 7-8) 5.The Proliferation of Species 6.The Evidence for the Theory of Evolution Attach the video guide to the back of page 49. Download File Next, as a simulation of natural selection, we went outside to hunt down some wacky mac. The purpose of the the simulation is to show how nature selects for a specific species. (WEATHER PENDING) The handout you received today, titled "Darwin's 5 Points of Natural Selection" is a review of the theories used to support Darwin. You can find this handout here if you lost it, it is due next class. The link has 2 pages, we are only doing page 1. darwinsfivepoints.pdf Download File Warm up today is on how humans are causing the next extinction. Click on this link to open the article. Once you read the article, answer the questions from the board in CANVAS. Next we organized our notebooks for the new unit. New cover sheet(47), new table of contents(48)...our unit will be called EVOLUTION, ENERGY and ECOSYSTEMS. Our unit on evolution sometimes can be a bit controversial so to start the unit we go over the differences between Laws and Theories on the back of page 48. Evolution is a theory. For the new unit, we started off with some vocabulary. On page 49 in your notebook. Define the following words(use the textbook). You will have to use the glossary and/or the index. Please skip 2 lines between each word once you have defined them. 1.Mutation 2.Natural selection 3.Adaptation 4.Vestigial organs 5.Evolution 6.Speciation Next we watched some video clips on biological evolution through Discovery Education. Lastly, if we have time we will do a quick activity showing an evolutionary trait in our ancestors, the opposable thumb
